Around 1926 an english lady created the First Company of Girl Guides in Oporto, with several portuguese, american and english girls. Almost right after that, a Girl Guides Company in Carcavelos, the same way. On 1st February 1943, D. Fernanda d'Orey becomes National Comissioner, giving a new energy to the movement, since now work required cannot be performed by foreigned chiefs, since they have little knowledge of the language and culture of the portuguese girls. Until that date, almost all girl guides were english (there were only nine Brownies and one Guide that was portuguese). They gathered in their own school with an english leader and were to finish their studies in England. The Guide Association of Portugal was officially recognized by the government in 11nd February 1934 and, at this date, the portuguese movement had 200 Guides and Brownies. In May 1943, D. Fernanda d'Orey (National Comissioner) puts on her official uniform for the first time, by greeting the 2nd cruise of Girl Guides and Scouts from Britain, whose last stop was Portugal. Together with guides from Oporto and Lisbon they greet the World Chief. After that, the guide movement keeps growing through Lisbon, Oporto, Carcavelos, Madeira, Angra do HeroÃsmo, Lourenço Marques and Luanda. But, unfortunately, at the moment the portuguese guides were struggling with a lack of chiefs/leaders, which led to a break in the movement due to that and due to the spanish war, WWI and a request to stop activities by the portuguese government. During this period of time, the only company in action was the Madeira Island one that had a very important role in the reception of war refugees children. Only in 1954 did the first meetings of girl guides that appearing again. The first group was in Lisbon, named Company Rainha D. Leonor and was linked to the protestant religion. Due to the enthusiasm of several womengot the approval of the Patriarch of Lisbon and te Minister of Education for the nomination of the Executive Comission.
Later in 1943,during the 18th World Conference that took place in Denmark, AGP is accepted as an associate member of WAGGGS. After 12 years, Association of Guides of Portugal is recognized by WAGGGS as a member. In 1991 it is celebrated the 60 years of AGP, whose high point was the National Concentration in Pinhal Novo. The next year, in 1992, the portuguese association received the "Olave Award" for the excelent community work done by Unit Poney from branch Moinho in the Lisbon area, in the host of refugees from the Bosnian war.
